Caution Ahead: Road Work To Take Place at Beginning of School Year

DCS Parents/Guardians/Students and Community:

We were recently notified by the Michigan Department of Transportation that two road construction projects are planned for our area, with one scheduled for this week and the other projected to start on the first day of school. Since both take place on busy M-15, we expect these projects could greatly impact traffic and wanted you to be aware so you can plan accordingly.

The first project is scheduled for this week as are school activities, including student registration check-ins, freshmen orientation and the Back to School Blast. Utility work begins this Wednesday, August 8, with lane closures on M-15 near Rising Street. The work will last about three days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

The second project is much bigger and will involve signal and intersection upgrades at the M-15 and Lapeer Road intersection. Work will include modernizing the traffic signal, adjusting left-turn phasing, curb and gutter, sidewalk and ramp improvements compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), resurfacing of the roadway and creating a dedicated right-turn lane for M-15 traffic accessing Lapeer Road (see map below).

Motorists can expect daytime single-lane and shoulder closures during signal and sidewalk work. Pavement resurfacing will occur during overnight hours (9 p.m. - 6 a.m.) with single-lane closures and flag control.

Work is scheduled to begin August 20, on the first day of school. Since this area normally becomes heavily congested before and after school hours, we would recommend that students and parents seek an alternate route or plan extra time for their morning and/or afternoon commute. Please be patient and extra cautious through this already busy intersection by paying close attention to road crews, pedestrians and fellow motorists.

The project is estimated to be completed by Friday, September 28.
