State order prompts DCS to transition all GSRP-Grade 12 students to online learning November 18-December 8
November 15, 2020
Dear DCS Families:
You may have heard this evening that the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has issued an order to reimpose restrictions to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
The order includes closing high schools for the next three weeks effective Wednesday, November 18 through Tuesday, December 8.
The order does not eliminate face-to-face learning for our students in grades GSRP-6, however; as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to increase, we believe that it makes sense to transition all K-12 students to online learning. We want to do everything we can to ensure the safety of our students and staff and, if you have checked our COVID-19 dashboard lately, you will note that the amount of students we have had to quarantine due to being a close contact of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 is reaching the 1,000 mark. In addition, the amount of staff that we have had to quarantine has reached a point where it has become increasingly difficult to provide adequate staffing in our buildings.
Therefore, all K-12 students will transition to online learning on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18.
We are asking our face-to-face students and staff to report to school as normal tomorrow, Monday, November 16, and Tuesday, November 17. This will enable your child’s teacher to share instructions about moving to a virtual format and give students the opportunity to get any needed materials, textbooks, items from their locker, etc. that they may need in order to transition to online learning on Wednesday. This will also allow parents time who may need to pick up their student’s medication and make arrangements for child care.
We anticipate that we will be distributing Chromebooks to those K-6 students in need of devices during the next two days. Since we just received a shipment of Chromebooks, we may need to distribute some of the devices on Wednesday and/or Thursday and Friday of this week but all students should have their own device by the end of this week. If this is the case, we will be communicating more information when it is available.
The virtual learning will continue to take place as long as the order is in effect. We look forward to resuming face-to-face instruction as soon as possible. In the meantime, please continue to watch your email for further communications from the district and, more importantly, please stay healthy and safe.
